Manhattan

New York City is comprised of five Boroughs or counties, Manhattan (New York County), Brooklyn (Kings County), Queens (Queens County), Staten Island (Richmond County), and the Bronx (Bronx County). For the visitor or tourist envisioning a trip to "New York City," they most often are referring to the island Borough of Manhattan. Manhattan is the "New York City" of movies and picture books, home to the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, Times Square, Greenwich Village, Grand Central Station, Central Park, the World Trade Center, and a host of museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Moden Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History. It is the urban borough of skyscrapers and the economic hub for the 21 million people living in the New York metroplitan region. Traveling Manhattan, one moves in any of three directions: uptown, downtown, or crosstown. For purposes of finding a home and neighborhoods to explore, the Borough is segmented into identifiable areas:

  • Downtown
  • Midtown East
  • Midtown West
  • Upper East Side
  • Upper West Side
  • Upper Manhattan

Each area being comprised of specific neighborhoods with different demographics, lifestyles, and amenity features.

Every NYC Transit subway line traverses Manhattan with the exception of the G Line. Manhattan is also served by the three regional commuter railroads: the Long Island Railroad, Metro-North, and NJ Transit. Additionally, it is served by the PATH train between Manhattan and Jersey communities across the Hudson River, and national AMTRAK railroad service. The borough is also serviced by local, regional and national bus routes, multiple heliports and ferry services, and has access to the three major regional airports: JFK International, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia.
